What inspired you to make your first change into leading a healthier, more active life?

I’ve always loved watching strongman on the tele and had dabbled a bit in gym training, then my son was born in 2019. I was really overweight and extremely unhappy both physically and mentally. But I wanted to set a good example for my boy, Roman.

What did you do?

Along with my wife, we started going to the gym, moving more and eventually fell in love with powerlifting and strongman training, spending hours looking at optimal training styles and becoming more disciplined in each session

How have the changes you made improved your mental and physical fitness?

I’ve lost around 10kg of body weight and reduced my visceral fat dramatically whilst increasing strength and improving my muscle mass. Challenging myself both physically and mentally has changed my life, and given me the mindset of “If it’s hard now, it’ll be hard later, you might as well do it.

What is the hardest thing about maintaining your new, improved habits?

Good Question: nutrition, we all get cravings and want that extra plate of pasta or that chocolate bar/fizzy drink etc. and that’s fine, but you have to be aware of where to draw the line to maintain or improve on your current position. A poor day of eating isn’t a problem, the problems arise when you don’t recognise patterns. If you can nail this, maintaining a healthy lifestyle gets easier.

What’s next for you?

Competing: I used to think the bar for entry into competition strongman was super high like the athletes we see on TV every year, but there are 100s of tournaments open for beginners to professionals

How would you advise someone who is wanting to improve their physical and mental fitness?

it might sound simple, but get started. Find something you enjoy doing and give it your all, whether thats weights, walking, jogging, jump rope or kayaking. Find a club and sign up. Keep yourself accountable, it’s you V you
